Royal Birmingham

The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Summer Show has opened, presenting around 200 artworks across the three floors of the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham.

Beautifully curated and exquisitely hung, the exhibition brings together painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking and mixed media from artists working across the UK and beyond. Among the works exhibited is Robyn Daly's new work, Portrait in Yellow.

Created using a long exposure and the artist's own body as subject, Portrait in Yellow challenges traditional expectations of portrait photography and questions what it is that signifies a person's identity. Rather than presenting identity as something fixed and easily defined, the work uses movement, colour and gesture to suggest a more fluid and lived experience of selfhood.

"I wanted the work to go beyond being a static single image and move deeper into exploring identity, art and art-making. And, of course, it delves into one of my favourite obsessions: women as subjects rather than objects."

"I resist the idea that a portrait must offer a definitive reading of its subject. I think portraiture can be a much more organic and transformational encounter between artist, subject and viewer."

Slow shutter speeds, movement and light work together to create images that blur the boundaries between photography and painting.

The RBSA Summer Show runs from 18 June to 1 August 2026 at the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham and offers visitors an opportunity to experience a range of contemporary artworks in one of the UK's longest-established artist-led galleries.
